I speak Cantonese, but can not read or write Chinese. Chinese people
adapt easily to the other culture whereever they go.

Next time you visit buy a China-made handheld Chinese-English
translator (top mmodel <$300) You can write on the screen either
English or Chinese words (maybe even phrases) and it will translate
along with the (putonghua) pronounciation. You can also write a
Chinese word by the correct stroke and get the English equivalent. The
guy (he lives 6 hours drive away) I went with insisted I get one. I'll
have to get a local friend to teach me how to operate it. I also
bought CDs (~$30) for learning conversational Chinese. Pretty
ambitious eh? Learn 2000 words and we should be able to knock their
socks off.

I got two different models of these Chinese-English translators in the
house already. I found them to be useless. I still depend on
bookbound dictionaries more than anything else. To me, these
Chinese-English translators go only one way, English. I never had a
chance to use it in the Chinese way.

I also took Mandarin classes a couple of times. The problem with
classes is, once out of the class, there was no chance to practice my
Mandarin Chinese. Oh!! well!! the old saying goes:

Old dog can not learn new tricks.

And old dog has difficulty retaining old tricks.
