There are many reasons for this. I will start off by suggesting two:

a) Competing with Westerners is a different ball game to competing with
native Indonesians/Thai/Malays. Westerners are much tougher to compete
with. And harder to exploit for cheap labour.

Chinese power groups tend to be clannish. The early emigrants were
from southern China dialects - Cantonese, Hakka, Fujiian or Teochew
with Cantonese as the biggest group. Cantonese are more
individualistic than other dialect clans. The other more tight knit
dialect groups are still too small to form a power bloc. Most of the
immigrants invest in the petty retail trades run by their own family
members. Those who succeed go into the professions. Few have chosen
to go into industry. Thus it appears immigrant Chinese cannot
compoete with westerners so far.

With the mainland Chinese going into the big league business sectors
the last decade we may see them fanning out of China to compete
successfully with western enterprises. I wouldn't be too comfortable
if I were you.

b) Most second generation Chinese assimilate into Western society.
Unlike in certain Asian socieities where they would never dream of
assimilating. I would suggest one of the reasons for this is because
they want to assimilate, in that they like the Australian culture and
way of living.

Up to quite recent times it was indeed fashionable to be a banana -
yellow outside, white inside. I believe they find themselves in
neither world. With China's resurgence many are reclaiming their
Chinese roots.
