China is seeking to consolidate cultural ties with South Korea, hosting
a Korean arts and entertainment festival in Shanghai from September 15
to 22.
It is the first Korean festival organized by the Chinese government,
aimed at jointly boosting the competitiveness of the cultural
industries of the two nations.
The festival, tentatively titled ``Inspirational Korea: a Festival of
Culture 2006,'' will take place in fall, hosted by China's Ministry of
Culture and the Shanghai Municipal People's Government, according to
the festival executive committee launched last week.
``We hope to promote the friendly relationship between the two
countries through holding a Korean cultural festival in China,'' said
Zhu Yingjie, Chinese minister-counselor of culture and a co-chairman of
the committee, in a press conference at the China Cultural Center in
Seoul.
During the festival, sponsored by the Korean Ministry of Culture and
Tourism, Korean films made in the past five years will be shown some
840 times on 24 screens, while TV program contents, games, animations
and other digital contents will be displayed at exhibitions, the
committee said.
The most popular Korean singers these days will heat up the festival
mood in a series of concerts and performances, where three B-boy crews,
practitioners of breakdancing, will show off a variety of jaw-dropping
spins. A total of 22 solo or groups have applied for the festival, the
committee said.

The latest styles in vogue will be presented in fashion and hairstyle
shows. Symposiums and contents market Shanghai Promotion Plan will also
be held.
However, detailed programs, including the films that will be screened,
need to be confirmed, said Yoon Yong-hoon, a South Korean TV program
director and a co-chairman of the committee.
``The films will be decided in accordance with the standard of the
Chinese screening process,'' Yoon said. Such movies dealing with
sensitive issues related to North Korea as ``Tae Guk Gi: The
Brotherhood of War'' may not be shown, he added.
The Chinese government plans to expand the festival to an international
cultural festival by 2010, starting with the 2006 event.
``Launching the plan with a festival of Korean cultural contents can be
understood that China has perceived South Korea as the most appropriate
partner for nurturing its cultural industry,'' Yoon said.
China wants to join hands with Korea to break through international
pressure to open its market such as Korea's recent screen quota issue,
which will be felt in several years, Yoon added.
