Updated at 1.03pm:
Two Chinese factory officials have been jailed for producing a baby
formula so low in nutrition that it killed one baby and left others
dangerously malnourished, state media reported on Tuesday.
The men were found to have knowingly produced the substandard formula
marketed under the brand name Lezichun, which caused the death of a
baby girl in the eastern province of Anhui and sickened others last
year, the official Xinhua News Agency said.
The girl was one of more than 200 infants who suffered malnutrition
after drinking phony formula in Anhui, where investigators found the
sale of counterfeit milk powder was widespread. At least 12 babies died
from drinking this and other brands of fake formulas.
The director of the infant formula factory, who was identified only by
his surname, Li, was sentenced on Monday to seven years in jail and
ordered to pay a 500,000 yuan fine, Xinhua said.
The factory's technical director, identified by his surname, Liu, was
sentenced to three years in jail and five years of probation, Xinhua
said, citing court documents from the Huancui District People's Court
in eastern Shandong province.
The factory in Shandong's Weihai city produced the shoddy
Lezichun-branded milk powder between 2002 and 2004, the report said.
Some 240,000 packages of Lezichun have since been confiscated.
China suffers from rampant counterfeiting of food and medicines, but
the milk powder cases caused a national uproar after pictures of
malnourished infants appeared on television and in newspapers.
More than 130 merchants, milk producers and officials were arrested,
and several local commerce officials and merchants have already been
imprisoned.
