South Korean Leader May Not Visit Japan
2 hours, 38 minutes ago
TOKYO -
South Korea's foreign minister on Thursday said a visit by President
Roh Moo-hyun to Tokyo later this year was unlikely, Japanese officials
said.
Foreign Minister Ban Ki-moon arrived in Tokyo late Thursday and met
with his counterpart Nobutaka Machimura amid a diplomatic row over
Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's visit to a controversial
war shrine earlier this month.
Machimura told reporters during a recess in the talks that Ban had said
prospects for a meeting between the two leaders in Japan, due later
this year, looked grim.
Ban said Koizumi's visit "trampled on the feelings of the Korean
people," according to Machimura.
Relations between the two countries have deteriorated since Koizumi's
Oct. 17 visit to Yasukuni Shrine. South Korea and China say the shrine,
which counts convicted war criminals among its deities, glorifies
Japan's wartime invasions of East Asia.
Roh and Koizumi have met twice a year since last year, and it's soon
Roh's turn to visit Japan. But Roh's office has said a summit before
the end of this year would be difficult "unless there is a significant
change in the situation."
