Venezuela and Syria sign cooperation agreements
DAMASCUS .-- The governments of Venezuela and Syria signed 12 juridical
cooperation instruments as part of President Hugo Chávez' official visit to
this Arab country.
The signing of the documents took place at the Palace of the People (seat
of Syria's government) after an expanded bilateral meeting between the
Venezuelan head of state and Syrian President Bachar al Assad, also
attended by their respective working teams.
Chávez noted the importance of these agreements, above all because they
define a statement of the will to strengthen relations between the two
nations. "We are determined to convert these agreements into a set of
plans, programs and projects," he said.
The Bolivarian News Agency (ABN) notes that one of the agreements covers
energy and oil and provides for the planned creation of a binational
enterprise for producing and refining crude oil in Venezuela and Syria.
Other agreements covered air and maritime transport, aimed at strengthening
commercial and technical integration, duty-free zones, tourism and
environmental protection.
Likewise, an agreement was signed for cooperation between the Venezuelan
National Assembly and the Syrian Parliament. Memorandums of understanding
were established in the areas of housing, radio and television, political
consultation and agriculture.
President Chávez qualified the signing of the agreements as the beginning
of stronger relations with Syria.
In his turn, Al Assad, announced during a press conference that Syria
supported Venezuela's aspirations to hold a seat on the United Nations
Security Council, given that it would represent a truly independent
position in that forum.

Syria, Venezuela Bash Hostile US Policy
Damascus, Aug 31 (Prensa Latina) Syria and Venezuela lambasted Washington s
hostile policy and double standard Thursday and demanded compliance by
Israel with UN Resolution 497, establishing its withdrawal from the Golan
Heights.
At the close of the Venezuelan president s visit, Hugo Chavez and his
Syrian peer, Bachar al Assad, signed a joint communiqué highlighting their
views on international policy and bilateral relations.
The presidents insisted that their foreign policy will focus on
confrontation with imperialist US policy, which they termed hegemonic and
aggressive all over the world.
Syrian head of state, Bachar al Assad, ratified the right of the Venezuelan
people to self-determination and supported the South American nation for a
seat on the UN Security Council.
Both heads of state asked the international community to pressure Israel to
comply with Resolution 497 of the United Nations, approved in 1981, telling
Tel Aviv to withdraw from Syrian territory in the Golan Heights, taken by
Israel in 1967.
They also condemned Israel s aggression on Lebanon and reiterated the right
of Palestinians to be independent people in their national territory.
Chavez, who arrived today in Angola, yesterday highlighted the potential
available to both the Syrian and Venezuelan peoples, while Assad affirmed
that Chavez visit will boost relations between both nations.
Venezuela and Syria signed 12 cooperation agreements, including in the
sectors of energy, oil, air and sea transportation, tourism, and
environmental protection.
