BEIT LAHIYA, Gaza Strip, June 10 (Reuters) - "Don't leave me alone."
With those parting words, and amid a sea of tears from thousands of
mourners, 7-year-old Huda Ghalya bade farewell on Saturday to her
mother, father and three siblings killed when a sunny day on the beach
turned into the child's darkest day.
The five family members were among seven Palestinians who died when an
explosion tore through the beach in northern Gaza on Friday as Israeli
artillery shelled the coastal area used by militants to fire rockets
into Israel.
She was swimming when her family died yards away onshore.
"Father, father, forgive me," Huda cried as she kneeled to kiss her
father's face at the stark cemetery in the northern Gaza town of Beit
Lahiya.
Huda fainted several times, only to be roused by women relatives who
splashed water and perfume on her face.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh
said they were symbolically adopting the girl, pledging to cover all
her living and education expenses.
Dozens of children from the Ghalya family's neighbourhood attended the
funeral.
"I do not want to go to the beach," one boy told another as they stood
to watch the bodies brought to the family house for farewell.
Armed militants, firing in the air, vowed revenge.
"We will kill 10 Jews for every one of the Ghalya family martyrs," one
gunmen shouted through a loudspeaker.
The Israeli military said it was investigating the explosion, which the
army said might have been caused by an errant shell.
Saturday's funeral was the latest of many such gatherings. Both
Israelis and Palestinians have buried the innocent dead who have been
caught in the crossfire, torn apart by suicide bombings or air strikes.
Israel Radio said Defence Minister Amir Peretz had sent a message to
Abbas voicing "deep regret at the deaths of innocent people".
