Palestinian Islamic trade union hails CUPE call for boycotting Israel

Gaza - Ahmed Al-Qutub, secretary general of the Islamic trade unions in
Palestine, has praised the decision by the Canadian Union of Public
employees (CUPE) - Ontario section to boycott Israel for its oppressive
treatment of the Palestinian people.

Qutub described the decision as a step in the right direction, and
constituted a relapse to the imposed siege on the Palestinian people.

He urged various world syndicates to follow suit, considering the CUPE
decision as a victory for the just Palestine cause.

The CUPE - Ontario section, which groups more than 180,000 public sector
workers, had supported, with sweeping majority during its annual conference
held in Ottawa on 25/5/2006, the international campaign for the boycott of
Israel until it "recognizes the Palestinian people's right to
self-determination."

The international campaign, which started in summer 2005, won the support of
many churches in northern America and 20 organizations in French-speaking
Quebec province in Canada.

The CUPE condemned the "apartheid wall" Israel was building on Palestinian
lands in the West Bank in its capacity as an illegitimate act that violated
international laws.
