IslamOnline.net.New Look, New Portal
By Ahmed Atta, IOL Staff

CAIRO, May 29, 2006 (IslamOnline.net) - IslamOnline.net launches on Tuesday,
May 30, its new design, featuring new sections and interactive services and
turning into a portal comprising 19 specialized English and Arabic websites.

The new launch is part of an ambitious three-year development strategy that
will see the websites, which contain 196 main sections, run independently
under the umbrella of IslamOnline.net (IOL) by 2006.

Maintaining the same quality standards, the new design has different colors
and navigational structure, allowing the audience an easier access to their
areas of interest.
"Because it is one of the biggest content websites, Islamonline.net opted to
change from the webpage browser to the portal system, which streamlines its
many pages into specialized zones," says IOL Deputy Managing Director Hisham
Gaafar.

The portal's front page links to all IslamOnline websites.
"This is, in fact, part of a three-year strategy to develop Islamonline.net,
making use of the many types of pages and extensive database to launch
independent websites serving the interests of our ever-increasing audience,"
Gaafar added.

New Services

The new design was entirely developed by IOL's computer graphics team after
four world-renowned web developers were unable to meet the needs of IOL's
special editorial character.

"We came up over the past year with 148 variant eye-catching designs for the
different pages of the 19 websites, including nine in English," recalls
chief designer Magdy El-Taweel.

"A taxonomy has been built up to classify more than 100,000 content items.
It branches into 1,901 main and sub sections."

IOL has also added new interactive services like e-training, SMS, and radio
broadcasting in Arabic, which started transmitting in January.

The new portal further contains an audio library archiving the sound files
of each of the 19 websites.

Launched in 1999, IslamOnline.net is considered the world's leading Islamic
website.

It received up to 500,000 page views per day in 2005 from 216 countries. Its
average daily production is 182 items in both English and Arabic.

Capping years of hard work on the Internet, IOL was granted the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO 9001/2000) certificate
in management systems in December 2004.
