Saint Anthony's Fire.
In reviewing John Potestio's book, "Italians of Thunder Bay", and in
particular the section dealing with Saint Anthony's Church Banning
Street, I would hope to correct some of the details, some are in the
wrong sequence, some important details are missing, some reversed.
1. Saint Francis Church.
Father Ermente drove me to the site, and asked that I helped with the
project. This was before any gathering were held at Jumbo Gardens.
2. The 'word' from Father Nazzani, was that not enough parishioners
were proposing to attend the new church, and therefore the building of
Saint Francis was cancelled due to a lack of support.
3. A few months before the fire, Father Nazzani had asked the chair of
the parish council, Dino DiGiuseppe to contact an architect to see that
plans be set up to 'expand' the Saint Anthony's Church on the Banning
Street location.
4. The Church was not destroyed by fire, by seriously damaged. Without
any investigation into the cause of the fire, the Church was
demolished, with the suggestion that it would be relocated on its site.
5. As time passed the comment was made that the Bishop was now looking
at what location was the best for the Church.
The historic account in the book, is not accurate ?
