Privately funded hospitals may be a good idea ?
The discussion of private health services fails to appreciate the
reality of privately funded hospitals operating services for the
general public paid for by public funding. No extra billing, merely
funded through the medicare system.
Not private hospitals that extra bill but hospitals built by private
money, and paid the same as we currently pay public hospitals.
This idea that private facilities is a bad idea fails to understand
that most all clinics are privately funded, usually by a doctor cartel,
and the services they provide are funded by the pubic coffers.
Most clinics are privately funded, saving the taxpayers millions of
dollars in capital costs. Here in Thunder Bay, our new hospital,
called a "Taj Mahal" by the current Health Minister was suppose to cost
the public 125 million dollars, but under a managerial mistake of a
'design as you go' process, has cost us, the taxpayers, over 300
million, and left two other smaller hospitals unoccupied, even though
they have underwent many renovations in the past including one hospital
with a relatively new cancer center that cost some 25 million dollars.
The public would be better served if they allowed private money to
build public hospitals and more of the private clinics that we already
have.
Just to clear the air about so called Public Hospitals, at the annual
hospital membership meeting, with fewer than 100 people in attendance,
the board moved to change the hospital board by eliminating the
representatives from the volunteer association, the foundation
association and most insulting to remove the representative from the
city council. With less than a two thirds majority, that required
under Robert's Rules of Order, the motion was accepted.
Bottom line, our so called 'public hospital' system is not that public,
and given that these 'non-profit' operating facilities normally operate
in the red, they are not 'non-profit' but in reality publically funded
deficit operations.
Time to rethink the use of privately funded hospitals as part of the
whole publically funded hospital system; remember the devil is in the
details, especially the missing details.
