San Miguel to put up plants in three Asian countries
San Miguel Corp., Southeast Asia's largest food and beverage firm,
plans to construct liquor and beer production plants in three Asian
countries to take advantage of their rising tourist arrivals.
These targeted countries are Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, according to
company vice chairman and president Ramon Ang.
"We are now in talks with several groups for partnerships. Our plan is
to produce both beer and liquor. Maybe in the next few months, we can
make an announcement," he said.
Ang did not disclose financial details of the business plan but said
that San Miguel will not be pouring substantial investments into the
expansion.
"We are not building a market from zero because we are already
exporting our products in these countries. It will not be hard for
us."
During the first quarter of the year, San Miguel's international beer
operations posted a 9-percent increase in sales volume, particularly
in Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam. The combined improving performance
of North China and Hong Kong translated to net sales of $63.1 million,
up 40 percent year-on-year.
