DOHA * Al Jazeera network's Arabic documentary channel has lined up a
series of high rating documentaries for the year 2008.
The Channel plans to work with independent filmmakers across the world
to create a range of documentaries covering issues in the Arab world,
Africa, Europe and Asia, Tawfiq Founi, director of Al Jazeera
Documentary Channel, told reporters on the first anniversary of the
Channel, here yesterday.
"We have signed contracts with many leading producers in the Arab
world, Europe, Canada, Turkey and South-East Asia. We are keen to get
a high quality production that focuses on the human being and the
environment and their interaction", he said.
A 30-hour documentary on Arabic leaders, six-hour documentary on
"Islamophobia' and a programme on 'Holy month of Ramadan', will be the
major highlights of the channel's New Year projects.
The channel has also plans to improve its own high quality production.
The Channel's team will make a documentary on Muslim minorities in
Cambodia and Vietnam, popularly known as the Cham Muslim." This sect
has been forgotten by the Muslims; and being highly influenced by
Buddhist tradition. They are also subjected to various kinds of
oppression and marginalization", Founi said.
As the next phase, the Channel will try to give a mix of local and
global flavour to its audience. The future projects include developing
the partnership with international producers, encouraging the
independent talent around the world in the field of documentary
production and developing mechanisms to activate a fund that would
support the promising documentary film makers", he said.
