Hectic schedule for footballers ahead of SEA Games
By ERIC SAMUEL
PETALING JAYA: The national Under-23 football squad preparing for the
Korat SEA Games in December are likely to play warm-up matches against
their counterparts from Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia and Botswana
next month.
National coach B. Sathianathan said that preparation for the Games
would go into full swing following their elimination from the pre-
World Cup tournament last Sunday.
The Under-23 boys, who now form the core of the national senior team,
were beaten 1-4 on aggregate by Bahrain.
"They will resume training on Saturday. We have lined up a hectic
schedule for the players ahead of the competition in Korat. We have
lined up friendlies and we are waiting for confirmation from the teams
to play them," said Sathianathan yesterday.
He added that if all went according to plan, Malaysia would play
against Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia from Nov 9-16 and they would
take on Botswana on Nov 21.
In the SEA Games, Malaysia are in Group B with Vietnam, Singapore and
Laos. Group A comprises defending champions Thailand, Indonesia,
Myanmar and Cambodia.
Malaysia last won the gold medal in the biennial Games in 1989 in
Kuala Lumpur. They reached the final again in the 2001 edition, also
in KL, and were beaten by Thailand on a golden goal. At the last Games
in Manila, Malaysia picked up the bronze medal.
