Swarm of bees kills one Cambodian, injures five others

Phnom Penh - Cambodian children throwing rocks at a bee hive
accidentally incited an angry swarm which attacked a group of nearby
farmers, killing one man and injuring five others, media reports said
Wednesday. The tragedy occured in the remote former Khmer Rouge
stronghold of Samlot in the north-west of the country Monday, Khmer-
language daily Rasmei Kampuchea reported.
Tim Pa, 54, was fleeing the insects when his foot became caught in a
vine and he fell and was unable to escape before being stung to death,
the report said.
A man identified as Nim, 32, his wife Sal, 29, and their friend Mom,
25, were hospitalised after being stung numerous times. Two other
labourers, Khouch, 30, and Mon, 20, suffered minor injuries. It is not
uncommon for people in former Khmer Rouge areas to use only one name.
"We couldn't do anything to help Pa when he fell. There were too many
bees," the paper quoted a witness as saying.
Police were not expected to take any action against the children who
accidentally sparked the attack but then could only watch as their
neighbour died.
