David embarking on epic journey
Former Stawell man David Rowe is about to embark on an epic ride
through Cambodia to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy
Association.
David and his wife Lisa, also formerly from Stawell, are supporting
the association as their son Vincent has just been diagnosed with
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
When Vincent was first diagnosed, David and Lisa felt helpless as
there is no cure. David decided to take part in Challenge MD which he
felt would be a great way to raise funds and awareness.
Challenge MD is a 512 kilometre bike ride through Cambodia undertaken
on behalf of one of 1000 men, women and children affected by the
devastating disorder, Muscular Dystrophy.
The aim of the ride is to raise funds and awareness for the disorder.
Each participant must raise $5000 as required by the Muscular
Dystrophy Association to take part in the ride.
To kick off the fundraising for David's ride, a group of friends from
David and Lisa's days at St Patrick's Primary and Marian College have
organised a sausage sizzle today. The event will take place at St Pats
School at lunchtime today.
While this will be aimed primarily at parents and friends of the
school, other donations to assist David in his campaign are being
accepted by the group of ex-school friends, led by Geraldine Carey.
Geraldine has urged the community to get behind the family.
"David and Lisa are well known in this area, as are their
grandparents, Des and Marlene Phelan and Margaret Rowe. Margaret in
particular has been a great ambassador for the interchurch council and
does so much for others, it would be good for the community to give
something back," she said.
Anyone who would like to make a donation towards David's quest to take
part in Challenge MD can contact Geraldine Carey on 5358 3021.
