The Alliance for Freedom of Expression in Cambodia on Thursday demanded
an investigation into the Dec 14 automobile collision that left
well-known Radio Free Asia reporter Sok Serey in a 10-day coma. "AFEC
is deeply concerned that this incident might be a premeditated
hit-and-run crime instead of an accident," the coalition said in a
statement. Witnesses said at the time that the collision occurred when
a man on Street 19 opened his pickup truck door into oncoming traffic
as Sok Serey and his daughter were riding a motorbike. "There must be a
thorough investigation as there are many possible ways that such an
accident can be staged by professionals," the statement said. Sok
Serey, who was released from hospital Tuesday, said he believed the
collision was an accident but wondered why police had not identified
the driver of the vehicle. "I'm wondering why there's been neither an
arrest nor a resolution," he said. Phnom Penh Traffic Police chief Tin
Prasoeur said that police failed to find the pickup driver but regarded
the incident as an accident.
