More charges pending against former Cambodian police chief

Phnom Penh- A senior police official said Wednesday that many more
charges were still to be laid against fugitive former top Cambodian
policeman Heng Pov, whose whereabouts remain a mystery. Chief of the
criminal section of the Cambodian National Police, Mok Chito said that
the six warrants on charges including kidnap, murder, conspiracy to
murder and attempted murder issued against Heng Pov so far were the tip
of the iceberg, and investigations were ongoing.
"We expect many more warrants to be issued (by the court)," he said,
adding that a number of kidnappings were still being investigated.
Formerly one of Cambodia's most powerful police officers, an
undersecretary of state in the interior ministry and an adviser to
Prime Minister Hun Sen, Heng Pov fled to Singapore in late July. He
sought asylum in Australia but was turned down.
Heng Pov is wanted for allegedly masterminding the April 2003 murder of
Phnom Penh Municipal Court judge Sok Sethamony, who was shot in his car
as he drove to work along a busy street. A trial of police formerly
under Pov's command is due to begin on September 18.
Heng Pov has also been linked to failed assassination attempts against
a newspaper publisher, an electricity authority official and the
national military police chief and the kidnapping of a Korean
businessman in September 2005.
The latest warrant from Phnom Penh Municipal Court was on September 1
for murder. The warrant does not specify whose murder.
Heng Pov faces life imprisonment if convicted in Cambodia, which does
not have the death penalty.
His last confirmed location since he fled the country was Singapore,
but that state was reported to have deported him for visa overstay, and
since then Cambodian officials say they have not been able to confirm
reports he was in Malaysia or if he had moved to a third country.
