Reality TV hits Cambodia
Friday July 14, 2006 08:46 - (SA)
PHNOM PENH - Auditions are underway as a leading Cambodian broadcaster
seeks 12 people to live together under the public gaze in the
country's first reality television show, a producer said.
The Cambodian Television Network's "CTN Coffee Shop" will throw total
strangers together to staff a cafe and live in the apartment above for
three months, as each week audience members and the participants
themselves vote one person off the show.
During that time their lives will be filmed and the participants will
have minimal contact with the outside world - phones and television
will be forbidden and even trips outside the cafe will be strictly
monitored, according to CTN. The last remaining participant will
receive a motorscooter.
"We're trying to make a new and different program that can entertain
people," said producer Kevin Kouch, adding that contestants would be
chosen for their "cleverness, stability and ability to tell the truth".
"CTN Coffee Shop" taps into a reality TV formula that is wildly popular
in many other countries, but remains relatively unknown to Cambodians
fed a constant entertainment diet of foreign soap operas and variety
shows.
Many of those showing up for auditions were looking for work or job
training rather than a shot at television stardom, local media reports
said.
Kouch said the show could also play a career counseling role because
"it shows the techniques to manage a small business."
The first episode of "CTN Coffee Shop" is expected to air within a few
weeks, Kouch said.
