PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - A leaking gas canister caused an explosion
in a house near the Cambodian capital that was locked from the inside,
setting it ablaze and killing a 4-year-old boy and his parents and
critically injuring a neighbor, police said Wednesday.
Chenda, a 25-year-old garment factory worker, and her son Pao Bun Thet
were home preparing dinner Tuesday evening when the fire started, said
Tam Vey, deputy police chief in Kandal province, where the accident
occurred.
Chenda, whom police only identified by one name, had padlocked the
front door of the house because she was "scared of thieves," Tam Vey
said. "So when the fire started, no one could get in to help her or her
son."
Her husband, Pao Sotha, 36, struggled to enter the house through a
window, but fell, suffering major head injuries and dying Wednesday
morning at a Phnom Penh hospital.
The family's 23-year-old neighbor was also seriously injured trying to
rescue them, Tam Vey said.
Kandal is 15 kilometers (9 miles) south of the Cambodian capital, Phnom
Penh.
