Dear Rottanakvongsa,
They're making progress but that progress, as you seem to inject, is
very slow, tedious and painful. The reasons are several and they mainly
had to do with Vietnam, the ideology of democracy and the Khmer
mindset. I'm glad we have the chance to interact and talk about this
issue. In fact, this is the time for the Khmer leaders to put their
minds on economics, education, environment and the saner administration
of justice.
Cambodian people enjoy politics. I was in camdisc and it seems to me
that most people there at that forum want to be the Prime Minister of
Cambodia. It has to do with the achievement of personal power and
freedom. Whenever people have no personal power or freedom or
happiness, they tend to go for the ultimate thing that is to become the
top person of the totem pole.
It should be the other way around and that is working to gain personal
power, freedom and happiness first then use that abilities and talents
to share personal power, freedom and happiness on a greater scale of
the demography. In the early 1980's, the Reagan Administration tapped
me to become part of his administration in some capacities. At the
time, my kids were growing up and needed my attention. Moroever, I
enjoy my profession of informaiton technology. I would not in this
world exchange higher political identificaiton with something that goes
to satisfy my psychic reward of seeing something getting accomplished.
With IT, one can see these things like magic simply because of the
rapidity of events and development.
In democracy, decision is not as simple as in communist regime where
opposition can be mute and silenced. In communism, there's only one guy
to make decision and that is the communist party. In some way, it's
efficient, economic and fast because there's no one to stop or slow
down the decision making process. In other way, it creates suffering,
unhappy feelings and unsorted out structural issues such as finance,
ethics, cultural identities and general issues of governance. This is
one of the main reason why the Soviet Union collapsed in the late
1980's.
The other reason for the poverty in Cambodia is Vietnam. It has to do
with cultural and political competition to get noticed on a global
level, for cultural identity and for national survival. Cambodia does
not know how to compete and it literally copies Vietnam in order to
compete with Vietnam. You know well in the game of competition that you
don't try to imitate the competition in order to win that game with the
competitor. This is a game issue as much as ethics and intellect at the
same time.
Last is the hypocrisy of the Khmer leaders themselves who lack the
character and the mind to be selfless, compassionate and caring. They
mostly fail the test of sincere intent.
To reverse all these pains and sufferings of the people in Cambodia is
very simple and it sounds stupid. It is to walk the path of sincere
intent. This is a universal remedy for anyone who wants to enjoys
freedom, happiness and accomplishment. Notice that all these things are
political intent of democracy. This is the algebra of the human
reality.
