Cambodian princes to watch SEA Games in city
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

TODAY'S football match at the Pana-ad Park and Stadium in Barangay
Mansilingan, Bacolod will both be exciting and spectacular.

This is because host Philippines and Cambodia, which is trailing for a
victory in the elimination round of the 23rd Southeast Asian Games,
will try to outdo each other in the presence of very important people
watching the game.

The Philippine team, christened Azkals by fans, for one will try to put
back the enthusiasm of their fellowmen who are egging them to win this
time after an unlucky strike against Thailand Wednesday.

Cambodia, on the other hand, will be honored to have the presence of
three of their crowned princes - His Royal Highness (HRH) Norodom
Buddhappong, who was already in town since last week, his father, HRH
Samdech Preah Mohessara Norodom Chakrapong, and his uncle, HRH Samdech
Krom Preah Norodom Ranariddh.

On board a private jet plane from Manila, both Chakrapong and Ranariddh
will arrive at the Bacolod airport at around 9:25 this morning,
disclosed Bacolod Sea Games Organizing Committee (BaSoc)
secretary-general Eric Loretizo.

A protocol officer, a cameraman and two Royal pilots will accompany HRH
Norodom Chakrapong, high private counselor to his Majesty the King of
Cambodia and HRH Norodom Ranariddh, president of the National Assembly
of the Kingdom of Cambodia and president of the National Olympic
Committee.

They will be welcomed by Governor Joseph Mara¤on, Mayor Evelio
Leonardia and wife Elsa and Mrs. Josefa Puentevella, in behalf of her
husband, BaSoc co-chair and Bacolod Representative Monico Puentevella.

Puentevella is in Cebu City to attend SEA Games opening ceremony there
Friday.

A private lunch will be tendered by a private group in the city for the
three Cambodian princes and party.

In the evening, Leonardia will also host a state dinner for them.

The venues, however, were not disclosed for security reasons.

However, Loretizo said the princes requested not to bother detailing to
them full security.

"What they really want is for them to be treated only like ordinary
people," added Loretizo.

The princes will stay overnight in a hotel in Bacolod and will fly back
to Manila the next day.

They will also attend the SEA Games opening at the Quirino Grandstand
in Luneta on Sunday afternoon.

Going gaga over the Azkals

Meanwhile, about 20,000 to 25,000 Filipinos are expected to flood the
Pana-ad stadium once again.

The La Carlota's Pasalamat Drum Beaters will enliven the game with
their lively music. The same group that wowed the audience in the
pre-SEA Games opening ceremony last Saturday in the same venue.

The fans of the Azkals are asked to wear blue t-shirts or caps to boost
the spirits of the national team. Both competing teams have a 0-1
win-loss streak. Cambodia bowed to Malaysia on Monday with a score of
5-0.

The City Government of Bacolod is again offering two free rides for
those who wanted to watch the game this afternoon.

City bus will leave from City Hall to Pana-ad at 3 p.m. in time for the
opening match at 4:30. The other trip is at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, classes of two campuses of the Bacolod City College in
Barangays Sum-ag and Taculing will be suspended starting at 2 p.m.
today to give the students a chance to watch the game and cheer for the
national team.
