Cambodian ruling party holds congress for future strategies
The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) started a tree-day
Extraordinary Congress at Phnom Penh's Mondial Center Monday to
evaluate past policies and plan for upcoming elections.
The congress will assess the implementation of party polices adopted in
2003 and seek strategies to prepare for elections for senators in 2006,
the CPP Chairman Chea Sim said at the opening ceremony.
The party congress will also elect new members to serve on its Central
Committee, he said, which will have nearly 300 members.
Chea Sim, also president of Senate, highly valued the cooperation
between the CPP and its coalition partner the royalist FUNCINPEC party
headed by Prince Norodom Ranariddh.
The CPP maintained that the cooperation between the two parties have
now entered into the best stage, Chea Sim said, adding that the CPP
will continue cooperation with FUNCINPEC, which he stressed conforms to
the common interest of the country and people and will be sure to
further strengthen the nation's stability and development.
Around 800 party officials from across the country attended the
congress. No representatives from other parties, including the
FUNCINPEC, were invited to the event, although Prime Minister Hun Sen,
who is deputy chairman of the CPP, was a guest of honor and keynote
speaker at FUNCINPEC's Congress last week.
Local media reported that besides the 2006 senate election, the CPP's
congress is also to prepare for elections for commune leaders in 2007
and lawmakers in 2008.
