Dear Derek,
You mentioned about your grandfather a tailor's apprentice and
Lord Roberts who went into Burma in 1886 to put down "dacoitry" after
King Thibaw's surrender - the dacoits were mostly his troops.
You sounded like the British like you will never change. You
are a learned person, I am sure, but sadly most Myanmars in the forum
may not understand what you are applying. So I have spens some of my
time to make a research and let them know what I found. It will also
be publishing on a seperate page.in this and other forums so that New
generation of Myanmars know what the British are up to. Whatever they
decide is up to them but they must know and they should know.
Here we go;
Resistance to British rule.
When Burmese reconquered Arakan and occupied Assam, thus coming face
to face with the British power in India. The result was the First
Anglo-Burmese war (1824-26) in which Siam ( Thailand) fought on
British side. The Burmese eventually had to sue for peace and lost
Assem , Manipur, Arakan and Tenasserim.
The second Anglo-Burmese war (1852) was provoked by the British, who
wanted to close the gap in their coastline stretching from Calcutta to
Singapore it left the Burmese Kingdom high and dry in Upper Burma.
As the British became more and more interested in trade with China
through its back door , they waited for a suitable pretext and in 1885
declared war on Burmese for the third time To meet international
criticism of their action , the British gave the excuse that the last
independent King , Thibaw ( ruled 1878-85) was a tyrant and that he
was intriguing to give France greater influence over the country.
Neither of these charges seems to have had much foundation.
The British annexation of Upper Burma was announced in 1886 January 1,
ending the Konbaung Dynesty and Burma independence. The Third Anglo-
Burmese was lasted but a week.. It formally ended before it had even
developed, but resistance to British rule lasted another four years.
The British decided however , not only to annex the whole Kingdom but
also to make it a province of India. The cause of that war was because
Bombay Burma Trading which was thieving the teaks in Burma .
The Burmese refused to accept British victory as final , and they
resorted to guerrilla warfare against the British army of occupation.
There were spontaneous uprising all over the country., led by former
officials and princes of the blood. They considered themselves as
soldiers still fighting the Third Anglo-Burmese War.
But for the British the war had ended and the fighters were rebels and
bandits . For the next four years British military officers acted as
both judge and jury in dealing with captured guerrillas, Villagers who
aided the rebels were also sternly punished
There were mass executions and even case of wholly massacred villages.
As the guerrillas fight on British tried to force the people into
submission . Villages were burned ; families who had supplied villages
with their headmen were up-rooted from their home and sent away to
Lower Burma and strangers were appointed as headmen for new village
officials.
Finally the might of the British army prevailed, and by 1890, with
thousands of guerrillas killed or executed - the struggle was over.
