Hired porter severely beaten by army officer

A hired porter belonging to Three Pagoda Pass on the Thai-Burma border
was severely beaten by a Burmese Army officer while carrying supplies
for Infantry Battalion No.18.
Ko San Win (37) was beaten up at night by a sergeant because he was
finding it difficult to carry the load due to exhaustion.
The porter said he was beaten on the head, face and body with the ***
of a gun. He suffered extensive bruises and cuts on his leg and
body.
Ko San Win said his strength ebbed because the army did not give him
enough food and water over six days when he carrying heavy supplies.
The troops left him in a hut in Maesali village after the beating.
Before the assault he had crossed 14 mountains with the battalion.
Villagers found him and took him to the Maesali village headman. The
village headman informed his family and they went to fetch him.
The battalion had hired Ko San Win for 200 Baht a day, and left Three
Pagoda Pass on July 9. The battalion hired 15 porters including him.
According to the hired porter and Maesali villagers about 20 porters
were forcibly take by the battalion from the Maesali area.
Ko San Win is being treated in Palaing Japan (Japanese Well Hospital)
of the New Mon State Party (NMSP). Ko San Win is poor and is a daily
wage earner in Three Pagoda Pass town.
