Change in Mon literature timetable in Thai government school create
problems

The Mon community in Sangkhlaburi Township Thailand is facing severe
difficulties in appointing permanent teachers to teach the Mon mother
tongue in Thai government school.
Thai government local school in Weangka Mon Culture village,
Sangkhlaburi, Kanchanaburi province today requested for full time Mon
teachers or an increase in the number of teachers during a meeting
between Thai teachers, the Preserve Local Culture Group (PLCG) Mon
teachers and administrators.
This year the school wants Mon teachers to teach pre grade I, grade I,
rade II and grade III every day for half a day and it needs at least
18 teachers, if all teachers do not teach full time. There are 12 Mon
teachers and some of them have other jobs for looking after their
families, despite teaching Mon language in the school.
"We have 18 rooms for pre grade I to grade III and we want more Mon
teachers to join and teach Mon every day for half a day. If there are
more Mon teachers we will also teach grade IV to VII," said the school
headmaster Mr Nara Sukvisid.
Grate IV to VI have eight rooms. But we are not sure yet whether PLCG
has enough Mon teachers to teach these grades, he added.
"PLCG now is now facing difficulties in appointing full time teachers
or increasing the number of teachers because they are unsure about
funds for Mon teachers this year," said the chairman of PLCG Nai Sein
Aung Min.
Last year, Mon teachers started teaching as volunteers in the
beginning of the programme and at the end of the school session the
Humanitarian Assistance and Reconciliation Project (HARP) under the
National Catholic Commission on Migration gave six months funding. Mon
teachers received three months salaries and left another three months
salaries for this year.
Thai government's education department in June last year allowed
Sangkhlaburi Mon students to learn their mother language in government
schools as a pilot project.
Last year's programme did not include teaching students of pre grade I
but only students from grade I to grade IX. Grade I to VI last year
were taught for two hours a week and grade VII to IX were taught every
day after school from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. But at the end of the year Mon
teachers refused to teach students from grade VII to IX as some
students were not interested to be taught beyond school hours.
Mon language teaching started in 2006 in Weangka Mon Culture Village
of the Thai government school. The PLCG wanted Mon children to be able
to read and write in their mother tongue.
"If Mon teachers have to teach from pre grade I and the PLCG does not
have enough teachers to teach grade IV to IX, PLCG's goal will not
succeed," said community leaders.
