SPDC suppresses real reason behind fire

The State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) has not only put the
lid on how the fire started in Zay-joe quarter in Moulmein, the
capital of Mon State but are pressurizing owners of the burnt shops to
rebuild in two months.
The state controlled media, The New Light of Myanmar said that four
shops in Zay-joe ward caught fire from a tea shop on the highway bus
terminal at 6 p.m. on February 17. One person suffered slight
injuries.
"They (authorities) would like to avoid their guilt," said an officer
from the New Mon State Party (NMSP).
According to an officer, the fire broke out in a petrol shop and
spread in just about four to five minutes in Mon shops, Lyet Rot or
Taing Rot and Dae Wee Oo.
There is only one petrol shop in Zay-joe ward. According to the law
nobody can have a petrol shop and sell in the middle of the town
except government fuel shops, he said.
"I don't know what kind agreement was reached between the petrol shop
owner and Myanmar Women' Affairs Federation," he said. But the owner
of the petrol shop hired the place over two years ago from Myanmar
Women' Affairs Federation.
Now the Development Affairs Department under the Ministry of Progress
Border Areas and National Races and Development Affairs ordered the
shops owners to finish rebuilding in two months.
The land in Zay-joe ward is owned by Development Affairs Department
and most owners just have their stalls.
If they do not build it now, the authorities from Development Affairs
Department can seize the place and refuse permission to rebuild in the
future.
Furniture, computers, bureau, and printers from Lyet Rot' stall were
destroyed in the fire and they cannot buy them again now.
