NMSP wants people's view on National Convention
Loa Htaw, IMNA
September 4, 2006
The New Mon State Party (NMSP) today called for a public response to
the Burma National Convention (NC) to decide whether it should or
should not attend. The junta announced it will continue the NC in
October.
The NMSP only attended NC as observers in the last round held early
this year.
The NMSP will hold meetings if the government invites the party again
to attend the NC in the second week of October. It will decide on the
basis of the people's view, it said.
"If we decide not to attend again in October, and the government
thinks we are against them then we will face more pressure" said NMSP
Liaison officer Nai Ong Mange.
"When pressure comes our people should support the party both
mentally and otherwise," he added.
"We want our people to give positive views to the party where they
should tell us the advantages and disadvantages of attending the NC. We
want our people to think for the party on the subject of attending the
NC" said Nai Ong Mange.
The NMSP is a Burmese ethnic ceasefire group and it signed a ceasefire
agreement with the junta in 1995. They attended the junta's NC in
2004 on being pressurized.
Since the ceasefire agreement, NMSP has received Kyat 4.1 million per
month from the junta. But the junta stopped supporting it in November
2005 after NMSP refused to send its representatives to NC and only
attended as observers.
"We do not expect support from the government. The most important
thing is what the benefits would be for our people if we attend the
NC" said Nai Ong Mange.
