SPDC once again plans to seize unlicensed vehicles

The State Peace and Development Council's Military Security Force (Sa
Ya Pa) has informed senior officials of the New Mon State Party in
Moulmein (Mawlamyine) that they are planning to seize unlicensed
vehicles once again.

The NMSP officials have warned all its Ramannya vehicle members to be
alert while travelling because Military security official met them on
June 8 and said that they are gearing up to seize the vehicles.

The Ramannya vehicle organization was founded by NMSP. The members can
use the party document in business dealings.

Businessmen can avoid small check points which demand money by showing
the party document. The party also handles cases that come up. Not only
the NMSP, but every cease-fire group has a vehicle's organization.

Cease-fire groups including the New Mon State Party were in the car
dealing business by an agreement before General Khin Nyunt was removed
from power.

Out of model vehicles were imported by boat from Japan through Thailand
and then arrived in Three Pagoda Pass on the Thai-Burma border.

People in Burma, especially in the capital cities like Rangoon and
Mandalay prefer to use cars imported from Japan because they are cheap
and are of good quality.

The SPDC branded the cease-fire groups' car business illegal and
started searching for unlicensed cars after General Kyin Nyunt was
purged. SPDC authorities seized every imported car on the Thai-Burma
border.

In March 2004, the military regime seized more than 1,000 vehicles.
Soon after, however, they gave back about 150 vehicles to the
Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA).

The SPDC authorities had been giving back some cars for the parties'
military transportation. Some people hid their cars and showed them as
the party's military vehicles when the SPDC went about seizing cars.


Only a few cars are now left but the Military Security Force is once
again planning to seize unlicensed cars appearing in public. Most of
the cars have been changed to look like Burmese products.
