The military government has started investigating the charges of
corruption against local authorities relating to the construction of
the tin and antimony factory following poisonous effluents seeping into
the biggest lake from which water is used by Three Pagoda Pass (TPP)
residents.

According to sources close to the new military intelligence group "Sa
Ya Pha," the Military Southeast Region Command has formed a
nine-member commission led by Daw Saw Khin, a businesswoman for the
investigation.

Sources said some local military officials and the Township Peace and
Development Council (TPDC) had made 2.5 million Bahts by allowing the
factory to be built where it is situated.

The TPDC chairman U Tin Win could face the courts and maybe shifted
from his position. Others, included in the corruption are U San Lwin, a
sergeant of the Sa Ya Pha. Some military officials will also have to
face the investigation, the source added.

On the other hand, recently the TPDC has given a contract to the
Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) for renovation and to make a
garden along side the lake.

Two weeks ago, TPP residents were shocked to see poisonous effluents
from the factory flowing into the Shwe U Daung Kan Lake along with
rainwater killing the fish in the lake. Local residents have been
worried about using the water from the lake. Residents and some ethnic
armed groups complained to high-ranking military officials and wanted
them to take action against the factory.

Although the complainants wanted the factory to stop production and
move outside the town, it is still operating residents said.

Earlier the residents had complained of a smell emanating from the
factory waste, which they claimed caused headaches and leprosy.
