Chicken prices drop in Yangon
Banyol Kin, IMNA
March 21, 2006
In the wake of the bird flu scare, people are hesitating to buy chicken
in the biggest chicken markets in Mingala Taungnyunt, Yangon. The
markets are nearly empty, according to a local journalist.
In the small quarter, markets are selling chicken at the rate of one
viss for 1,500 kyat compared to the previous price of 3,500 kyat but
still no one wants to buy it "I don't want to eat chicken either"
the journalist said
The authorities have banned transportation of chicken and eggs on the
highway.
There is no investigation to ascertain whether H5N1 virus is really
infecting the chicken. But they (the authorities) just killed all
chicken in the farms. So the investors are hardly affected," the local
journalist said. A poultry farm can produce thousand pounds of chicken,
valued at 600,000 kyat in two months.
Fried chicken shops are closed and pilaf shops (rice mixed with oil and
chicken) have not displayed stocks instead they have substituted it
with mutton, beef, and vegetable because nobody is eating chicken.
Before the avian flu scare these were popular food shops in Yangon.
There is no poultry farm in Yangon but chicken is brought from Hmawby,
Taikkyi, Htaukkya and Mingaladon Townships.
The H5N1virus was found in Mandalay's Aung Myei Tharzar quarter, and
Pyin Oo Lwin. There is a rumour that it has been found in Pathein,
Ayeyarwady division.
Journalists' based in Yangon do not have permission to report on the
bird flu. "We will try and report as much as we can but we don't
know whether the censors will pass it", said one journalist based in
Yangon.
