Burma adopts new act barring migrant workers to neighboring countries

Local authorities of the ruling SPDC ordered to local people in
southern Burma to re-register the households and families with payment
and are checking the people who are absent at homes in order to enforce
the new act of barring the migration of workers to neighboring
countries - Thailand and Malaysia.
"The days before yesterday, our Township authorities ordered to every
family to buy a household registration with price of 100 Kyat per form.
The immigration office ordered the households to re-register their
family members." Mr. Ko Khaing, a Kamarwat villager from Mudon
township told.
"Some families denied to register again as they already register in
the previous years, but the authorities has threatened to do so," he
added.
The signboard barring human traffickers put in front of house in last
year
Currently, the State immigration authorities ordered to households in
Mon State to register the family members again in order to make the
national identity cards. But the people know they will demand more
money for the new issuance of ID cards.
We have been ordered since last month and "our friends has paid 7000
Kyat for changing the identity card. Some had paid for 5000 Kyat to get
a family registration, said Ms. Ma Chit a Nyaung-gone villager from
Mudon Township .
"Yes, the authorities not only check just which households are in
villages, but they also checked who are absent in the family. If you
son or daughter not at home (working in Thailand ), you must be
interrogated by the authorities where they are traveling and working
for what reason," said a Mon community leader in Pegu.
Thousands of Pegu residents went to Thailand for seeking jobs and the
local authorities strongly barred them to travel. Pegu residents are
tightened for traveling and they are also ordered to register their
guests after May 17 bomb explosion. Currently Town residents in Mon
State and Karen State are similarly suffered from the new restriction
of movement.
Before the government enforce a new act of restriction against
movement, the local authorities put a lot of signboards and distributes
flies around towns and villages in southern Burma about human
trafficking and illegal entering to neighboring countries is against
the existing laws.
Some Township authorities also fined the migrant workers those who
returned from Thailand and some people are arrested and put in
detention.
"No body can bar us because we have no employment (in Burma ). If our
village headman decide to fine us for seeking jobs in Thailand , we
will point to their sons and daughters who are similarly in Thailand to
also seek jobs. Even the USDA (Union Solidarity and Development
Association) members have also migrated to Thailand for jobs," a
villager from Ye township said.
Although military government planned to bar the people migrating to
Thailand and Malaysia to seek works, but the immigration authorities
and members of Burmese Army have cooperation with migrant worker
traffickers and they demand money 700 Baht per migrant worker and allow
them to cross the border in Three Pagoda Pass town.
There are about 1 million of Burmese migrant workers are in Thailand in
various industries, such as fishing, agriculture, construction and
others.
