Myanmar declares foreign-based dissident groups unlawful

(Kyodo) _ Myanmar's junta has declared four foreign-based dissident
organizations and their affiliates unlawful, state-run newspapers
reported Monday.
The declaration Sunday makes the National Coalition Government of Union
of Burma, the Federation of Trade Unions of Burma, the All Burma
Students Democratic Front, and the Shan State Army-South unlawful
groups.

Members of the groups can now be sentenced to two to three years
imprisonment and the organizers of the groups to three to five years in
jail if caught.

Although the dissident organizations operate outside Myanmar, members
or groups in Myanmar linked to them can be prosecuted under the
declaration.

The self-declared "parallel government" is based in the United States,
the trade union group in Bangkok, the Shan State Army-South on the
Thai-Myanmar border and the students' group in many countries.
