Subject: Organ Transplan
about 20 years ago a friend of mine needed a heart transplant,he attended
the hospital for blood tests as part of the transplant programme,,next to
him in the hospital was another patient also waiting and hoping for a
transplant,
The surgeon came into the ward and asked my friend some questions,,and put
his hand under his pillow
He did the same for the other patient, and out came a pack of cigarettes,
the doctor ordered the nurse to get the mans clothes and discharge
him, saying he would not waste an organ on such a man giving that a lot of
despaired people were waiting to get on the transplant programme
My friend described to me how that man was on his knees begging and crying
asking the doctor for a 2nd chance , to no avail,
One wonders if the patient sentenced himself to death ,or the doctor
sentenced him.[all people going onto the transplant programme are warned
about tobacco and drink]
My friend went on to get a transplant, [and he only had stamps, no
insurance] and lived another 20 years,,though in his latter years he went
back to the ciggies and beer ] he died last year aged 58
Today I wonder, giving that George Best is back on life support, did he
deserve the liver transplant ,that so many others would have taken great
care with
Is it wise to give an alcoholic a new liver ???? Did he deserve it ???
