Iran: IAEA aid suspension "politically-motivated"

Updated on 3/9/2007 at 16:9

Ali Akbar Velayati, international affairs advisor to Iran's Supreme
leader, on March 8 said that the International Atomic Energy Agency
(IAEA)'s decision to suspend 22 out of 55 technical aid programs to
Iran was "politically-motivated".

Mr Velayati said that IAEA's decision was more a gesture of
psychological warfare than a truly technical or scientific move and
would in no way affect Iran's self-sufficient nuclear projects.

According to Xinhuanet, IAEA's decision was in response to Iran's
refusal to halt uranium enrichment as demanded in the UN Security
Council's Resolution 1737 in December banning sensitive nuclear trade
that Iran could use to produce nuclear fuel.

Iran's Ambassador to IAEA, Ali-Asghar Soltanieh, said that Iran would
not stop uranium enrichment despite the suspension of technical aid.

Iran has also brought the nuclear issue to the board meeting of the
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) which expressed its concern about double
standards on the nuclear issue as the UN Security Council did nothing
about Israel's nuclear program even though Israeli officials have
admitted the country's possession of nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, during talks on new UN sanctions on Iran among five
permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany, Russia and
China raised objections to nearly every Western proposal except a ban
on arms exports, reported Reuters.

Their reservations include a mandatory travel ban, financial and trade
restrictions and an expanded list of Iranian officials and firms whose
assets would be frozen.
