As I have explained earlier, killing is only a small part of the
hunting experience, rather like Anton described with fishing. But yes,
it is mostly done for the entertainment of the total experience, not
for survival.

With fishing you can choose to release your catch. Hunters could
probably get the same "experience" without having to kill the prey:
shoot a paint bullet instead. Each hunter would have a different color
so you could tell who's shot it was. But then again: why bother to
harass the animals? The hunters could shoot at each other instead to get
the same experience. In fact that's what we did some 8-9 years ago at a
stag party: played "war" with paintball rifles in the forest. (I was hit
in the thigh - it hurt pretty bad).

I enjoy paintball more, too. From my friends who are hunters the
experience seems to be quite different. They get up early in the
morning, and spend hours tracking the animals through the forest. Some
days nothing is caught. Hunting eventually culminates in the kill; the
deer is then brought back and processed. Venison prepared well (it is
much more difficult to cook deer than to cook cows) is very good.

Tagging the deer with a paintball probably doesn't feel the same.

BM
