Oh, old story! British killed Irish language. It has been made by
local bastards just to legitimize own 'raspizdiaistvo'.
Old fella told me that Gaelic dissapeared naturally. In forties (or
about) a lot of students were not able to pass exams that were in
Gaelic to universities and were made decision to eliminate requirement
for own language at all. Fucking idiots! They rejected need to learn
own language and now blames British for sins. The man who told me that
is old Dubliner, who saw this in all his eyes.

You missed my point.

If there would have been a strong national awakening in addition to outside political interfiering in Ireland in the 19th century things could have gone otherwise. But as there was not enough of the two mentioned the language nearly died. The same could have happened in Finland to which I was referring. If the Swedes and the Russians would not have had the need to use Finland as a buffer, Finland with its language would have been replaced by either swedish or russian. Just as it has happened in Ireland and what you wrote.

People tend to be practical. They use the language that gives them more opportunity to make their life better. Idealism is forgotten in this case.
