After 9/11/01 nothing can surprise me anymore. Back to the point: That
NATO swallowed new EU members (incl. ex-DDR)
NATO didn't invade DDR.  Eastern Germans decided to join the rest of
the country, that's all.

Wrongo. Gorby was promised (by both Reagan and Baker) that East
Germany will remain neutral, i.e. outside NATO, if he, i.e. his SU,
allows German reunification. This was confirmed not only by Gorby, but
also by Baker himself in a BBC documentary a few years ago. However,
this promise was broken in the aftermath. East Germans wanted into BDR
(sure: it's economy, stupid!) but not into NATO. They (the majority)
had no desire to just switch military blocs. And current polls say
that most reunified Germans would vote against NATO membership now, if
they could. The majority regards USA as the main warmonger on Earth. US
+/-NATO wars in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and proxy war in Georgia
speak volumes ...
