In April, Finnish Railways subsidiary VR-Track signed a contract to
renew the Tartu - Valga line with Eesti Raudtee. The 56 km line will
be completely renewed over the next two years at the cost of five
million Euros, using 5000 tonnes of new rail and 112,000 new concrete
sleepers. Maximum speed will be raised to 120 km per hour.
The line is part of the Rail Baltica project, an EU Trans European
Network involving an upgraded railway from Tallinn to Warsaw, part of
which (most probably the section between Sestokai and Kaunas) will be
standard gauge.
One hopes that passenger trains will soon be running through from
Tallinn to Riga one more.
