estland? don't you think estonia sounds 10 times better?
Those who are a few years older remember the m/s Estonia disaster in 1994
(850+ dead), the worst civilian loss at sea since the Titanic. For them
'Estonia' is a constant reminder of travel-related risks, which is not
particularly good from an Estonian point of view (the country earns a lot
from tourism).
Luckily, however, the word 'Estonia' is not used in the most important
customer languages: the Finns say 'Viro', the Latvians 'Igaunija', while
Swedes, Germans, Danes and Norwegians use 'Estland' anyway. So there is not
much point in changing the English name. The average British tourist is too
uneducated to know about European geography;
This is changing rapidly, for example, I haven't had any questions
like "is Latvia in Russia?" for at least 6 years now. More and more
people are aware of whereabouts of Baltic states, although some still
mix up Latvia and Lithuania.
he's mainly interested in the
local booze and beer prices.
Don't know about Tallinn, but beer prices in Vecriiga are not that
much different from a local pub in Mansfield any more. Riga becomes
more and more expensive. It may appear that in the near future
Bulgaria becomes a stag party favorite.
