I hope the Baltic governments are thinking about how they are going to
handle the problem of all these easterners thinking they can just
blend in with the local Russian/russophone community and not bother to
learn the national language. I don't know what the provisons are for
workers who want to stay on long term, for many years, and maybe
settle permanently. What I do know is that watering down the language
knowledge requirements for citizenship applicants would be national
suicide.

sounds like canada. people who won't learn the language shoot themselves in
the foot thought because almost all of them will be relegated to
second-class status naturally. the good thing is that their children always
learn one of our national languages. i'm not sure how the feelings are in
the baltics but it sounds more like enclaves are set up where multiple
generations refuse to learn the language. is this how it is?
