(for non Balts: Gulbis sounds like 'gulbe', which means 'swan' in
Lithuanian and Lettish. Swan Lake = Gulbiu ezeras)
Gulbis is an exact Latvian word for Swan. Gulbene is a small town in
Latvia's north-east. Not sure if it is full of swans, but there is an
art museum therehttp://www.viss.lv/index.php?PersID=399&act=ProdApr&persprodid=162755
OK. Thought it would be 'gulbe', same as Lithuanian. When a peasant
was going to Vilnius for the first time, someone would say "Make sure
no one tries to sell you "swan's milk" (gulbiu pienas) for a high
price."
I hope there aren't any politicaly minded linguists who tries to prove
that Latvian is not a language, but just a historical variant of
Lithuanian.
The term used is "poor cousin" Dmitry. Not a political notion, nor one
of scientific fact as Gintukas the Great would like you to believe.
According to Gintukas the Great - from the Lithuanian language
perspective - Latvian is comparable to a distant country relative who
visits once a year and has yet to master the use of the modern toilet.
This doesnt apply to you though Dmitry. You're in Nottingham. You live
in a Commonwealth nation. You, like Gintuks, now know what the flush
handle is for.
Vidas
Hey now, Gintas lives in a Commonwealth nation, too -- at least until
he convinces his province to pursue sovereignty!
Maybe not a "poor cousin," but Lithuanian is more valuable to
linguists studying proto-Baltic and PIE, whether Hui disputes that or
not. Endzelīns does see more Slavic influence on Lithuanian than
Gintas does, though.
Viso gero,
