Interesting! Would Swedish-Finn describe
him/herself as Swedish or Finn?
That's a very interesting question. Here's what usually happens:
1) When in their own company and speaking Swedish, Swedish-Finns call
themselves Swedes ("vi svenskar" = we Swedes) but basically only because
it's a shorter expression than 'we Svecophones' or 'we Finland Swedes';
2) When among other Finns, they never call themselves Swedes (neither in
Finnish nor Swedish) but refer to themselves as Svecophones or Finland
Swedes;
3) When among Sweden Swedes, they call themselves Finland Swedes or
'Finlanders', a special word created around 1900 to underline that not all
people in Finland are Finns (in the lingual sense);
4) When among non-Nordics, they simply call themselves Finns.
It goes without saying, that all Finns regardless of language support their
own national team also against Sweden. My paternal aunt, who was a Swedish
citizen, born in Baku, lived all her adult life in Sweden and hardly knew
any Finnish, remained a Finnish patriot in sports all her life, much to the
chagrin of her Swedish husband...
As a matter of fact, Finland Swedes are often much more critical regarding
Sweden than Finnophones -- probably because they know our western neighbours
so much better.
Are there many ethnic Suomi who dislikes Swedish-speaking minority?
Something is telling me that there aren't many.
