I find it odd when the party is based on Ethnicity.

In Finland we have the 'Svenska Folkpartiet' (note the word 'folk', Vello!),
the Swedish People's Party, which politically covers a wide spectre from
conservative to leftist liberal. It represents the Swedish-speaking
population, which in turn is socially very heterogeneous, including fairly
poor fishermen from the archipelago, farmers from Ostrobothnia and the south
coast, urban intellectuals and entrepreneurs and even most of our small
nobility. Svecophone workers usually give their votes to the Social
Democrats or the Leftist Union; both parties (and the Greens) being
bilingual. One could say that Folkpartiet is based on ethnicity (btw there
is a similar Danish party in northern Germany). Folkpartiet (founded in
1907, IIRC) has two ministers in the present cabinet.

But, like I've pointed out so many times before, you can't apply any of this
to the Baltics: our Svecophones have been here for a thousand years, and
many are simply descendants of originally Finnophone families that adopted
the ruling language when they advanced socially during bygone centuries. We
are basically one 'ethnicity' with two languages.

John
