European Union members Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland have
proposed that Germany and Russia drop plans for a controversial
natural gas pipeline along the Baltic Sea floor, according to a
Lithuanian newspaper report Tuesday.

Russia and Germany should opt for a land route running through all
four states instead,


I hear this proposal has received support from many other EU
countires, who joined in on this project. So, as it stands now, the
pipeline will go through 3 Baltic states, Finland, Poland, Czech
Republic, Austria, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal.

First, the pipeline will go north from Russia to Finland via Lithuania
and Latvia and Estonia. In Finland, it will make a 180 degree turn and
go back south via Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia again. Then it will go
through Poland, Czech Republic, Austria, Italy, France, Spain to
Portugal, at which point it will turn again and go through Spain and
France into Germany.

The Baltic scientific experts (and some of them even have college
education!) welcomed this development. They were quoted to say:

- The more the merrier! What will be wrong if the gas gets to travel
all over Europe befor eit arrives in Germany? We are civilized, well-
traveled and well-educated Europeans, and we naturally want our natual
gas also to be well-traveled and well-educated.

Russian and Gemran officials could not be reached for comments, as
they were hospitalized with severe cases of twisted ribs caused by
uncontrollable bouts of laughter.
