Lithuania criticises Estonia for Soviet monument

02.05.2007, 17.42

VILNIUS, May 2 (Itar-Tass) -- Lithuanian parliament speaker Viktoras
Muntianas has criticised Estonian authorities for the poor preparation of
the dismantlement of the monument to the Soviet Liberator Soldier in
Tallinn.
He urged everyone to understand that Russian people will never agree to
the interpretation of the monument to Soviet soldiers as a symbol of
occupation.
In an interview with radio Ziniu Radias, Muntianias said, ³It is very hard
for an ordinary Russian person to understand speeches where liberation
[from Nazi fascists] is linked to occupation.²

Speaking about the Soviet Liberator Soldier in Tallinn, he said, ³The
consequences of these actions were not properly forecast.²

I saw this, too, and was going to post it -- but you beat me to it. I
have a feeling that the remarks may have been taken out of context. Is
this so? Can our brethren to the south give us details?

Latvia's official reaction has been... in my opinion, uninspired,
muted. Why? Partly because the powers that be are determined to sell
us out as soon as possible, and we're in the process of doing the deal
(ratification of the Border Agreement and like legislation, which has
been followed by amazingly ridiculous arguments from certain quarters
arguing for giving the local vote to non-citizens, esp. from former PM
Godmanis and the LPP oligarch). But mostly because Latvia would not
like to see Estonia's violence take place here, a legitimate concern.

Unofficial reaction -- one of the most interesting was from Nils
Muiznieks, formerly Mr. Integration (and bête noire of the right wing)
and now again an academic. Explaining that integration is more
advanced in Latvia (take that, Eugene!), he also noted that the
Russians in Estonia are different because those who came to Latvia
tended to be better educated and of a higher class -- engaged in
technological industry and such rather than oil shale, etc. Would
those of you who understand both Estonia and Latvia agree with that?

Perhaps Holman and Petriukas should
understand that one needs to read russkie
media with care. Neither Holman nor
Petriukas would have any desire to do
so - judging by past performance related
to Lithuania. That is simple fact. That
which might look bad for Lithuania
brings joy to their malicious little
hearts.

So far from Lithuania:

1. President Adamkus - supports Estonia.
2. PM Kirkilas - supports Estonia.
3. The Lithuanian parliament - without
*any* dissenting voices - supports Estonia.
4. Lithuania has supplied Estonia with requested
riot-related police equipment.

Best - - Henry

I do believe that I entered this particular thread to ask whether this
wasn't taken out of context, you malicious little Colorado Bug, and I
asked a specific question about this speech by the speaker. I love
Lithuania and will be there twice this month. How's Colorado?
