I saw this, too, and was going to post it -- but you beat me to it. I
have a feeling that the remarks may have been taken out of context. Is
this so? Can our brethren to the south give us details?

Latvia's official reaction has been... in my opinion, uninspired,
muted. Why? Partly because the powers that be are determined to sell
us out as soon as possible, and we're in the process of doing the deal
(ratification of the Border Agreement and like legislation, which has
been followed by amazingly ridiculous arguments from certain quarters
arguing for giving the local vote to non-citizens, esp. from former PM
Godmanis and the LPP oligarch). But mostly because Latvia would not
like to see Estonia's violence take place here, a legitimate concern.

Unofficial reaction -- one of the most interesting was from Nils
Muižnieks, formerly Mr. Integration (and bête noire of the right wing)
and now again an academic. Explaining that integration is more
advanced in Latvia (take that, Eugene!), he also noted that the
Russians in Estonia are different because those who came to Latvia
tended to be better educated and of a higher class -- engaged in
technological industry and such rather than oil shale, etc. Would
those of you who understand both Estonia and Latvia agree with that?
