This is another one of those dirty little secrets that most Finns would
rather not know about concerning their country's WW II history
Yes, it's amazing how many dirty little secrets there are in the Finnish
(and Baltic) past!
But luckily there is Eugene Holman, knight of the truth in shining armour,
who fearlessly uncovers them all and brings them to our attention.
I know that you are being jocular, but I would bet you several rounds of
beer that most Finns fifty years of age or younger do not know, and would
even be ready to deny, that Finland ran concentration camps in the parts
of Soviet Karelia that it occupied during the Continuation War. The news
about the exchanges of Soviet POWs with the Gestapo and the consequent
issue of some Finnish moral culpability for the fates of those who
happened to be Jews was not exactly welcomed, either, nor, for that
matter, is Arno Anthoni a widely known name in Finland, either.
And brings, and brings, and brings, and brings, and...
Yes, Henry writes that I am "quite willing to shovel [my] bull*** until
the cows come home". Even if the subtleties of connecting shoveling
bull*** with the cows coming home escape me, I think that if there is one
place that revisionist interpretations of Baltic and eastern Scandinavian
history belong to be discussed, it is SCB.
As you probably know, I have been busy as a beaver translating and editing
Hannu Rautkallio's book *Holokaustilta pelastetut*. I am currently working
on a section dealing with intrigues between president Ryti, German
ambassador to Finland Wipert von Blücher, German foreign minister Joachim
von Ribbentrop, Heinrich Himmler, and the German Security Services in
Finland during von Ribbentrop's visit to Helsinki, June 22 - 26, 1944. The
long and the short of it seems to be that Germany was working on the
premise that Finland was a bona fide ally, while Finland was playing the
cobelligerent card and distancing itself from every German strategem and
suggestion that it could.
History viewed at the microlevel reveals that things are seldom as they
seem when looking at it from a more distant perspective. If I have
stimulated discussion and caused people to think twice before accepting
the big picture uncritically, my efforts have not been wasted.
Regards,
Eugene Holman
