Lithuanias "Labor" Party - an ironic name for a political party with no
platform and certainly no interest in putting in any sort of effort -
is well on its way to being effectively and legally dissolved. Seems
this all came about rather quickly. A political party with a leader who
was otherwise untouchable has suddenly fallen apart.

Consider recent events to understand why. Uspackich wasnt trusted by
many in the leadership. Politically he was important - his faction in
Seimas was significant and he was a very popular figure - popularity
may be fragile but his political weight was seemingly keystonelike in
heft. So what happened to him ?

The simple consideration is Paulauskas. Did Paulauskas provide
Uspackich with the political cover he needed to operate freely ? I cant
imagine it could have been anyone else. No one else needed Uspackich
like Paulauskas did. Paulauskas' party is anemic - barely even
noticeable but it was part of the ruling majority and held two key
Ministry positions - along with Paulauskas' position as Seimas
Chairman. This seems to be out of balance.

So when Paulauskas, Lithuanias former prosecutor, was rudely removed as
Seimas Chairman - Uspackich and Kubilius being initiators with the
assistance of the SocDems - Paulauskas pulled down Viktors shelter. All
of a sudden - literally within a few weeks - evidence of Labor party
financial improprieties become public knowledge. Uspackichs home and
party headquarters(plural) were raided by the authorities and Viktor
leaves Lithuania for his native Archangelsk - where he's been for well
over a month now. Significant legal action and prosecution seem
assured.

Lopata, I believe, remarked some several months ago that Uspackichs
time in Lithuania was running out and predicted he'd be returning to
Russia soon. I personally didnt believe it. Now I have to wonder how
Lopata could have known that. Clearly he knew there was a problem.
Didnt anyone else ?

By the way, a Amerikos Lietuviu Bendruomene committee is holding
meetings this week in Lemont Illinois with eight members of the
Lithuanian Seimas in attendance. Topics range from the status of the
Valdovu Rumai construction (spare me) to visa free travel status and
the LT Embassy's agenda for furthering Lithuanian/US business
relationships. Several of the sessions, if not a majority, relate to
issues that arent even in the legislative purview of Seimas. There
seems to be little or no real point to this. Maybe some local
personalities are being stroked by the event but it will definitely,
without a doubt, accomplish absolutely nothing.

The natural question being - with all thats going on in Lithuania with
forming a new government etc etc - what are they doing here ? Cant say
theyre here for the luxury. Theyre being housed at a low budget motel
off of a busy expressway ramp on the western edge of nowhere.

Their attentions and priorities should be elsewhere. This should be
obvious to all involved.

Vidas

So - what is your opinion of Kirkilas - the
proposed new PM?

Where is the "pickle" at this time? Home in "matushka"
or exposed to possible court cases in Lithuania?

Best - - Henry
