Finally some semblance of realization at the governmental level..
Things that we have been noting here in SCB for years and years.
I translate a bit from a LETA/Delfi article of April 25:
'LETA 25. aprilis 2006"
'Tuesday at Helsinki University answering questions regarding Latvija's
trade with russia, the Latvian president Vaira Vike-Freibergs pointed
to political influences that made russia an unreliable trading partner.
She cited the russian embargoes on Georgian products as an example of
that russian political agenda.
In her speech she expressed her pleasure that Finland has chosen to
make relations with russia as one of the top policy issues during
Finland's EU presidency rotation. She stated that Latvia believes that
the EU must develop a unified policy in dealing with russia.
Bi-lateral relations with member nations and russia must not be based
on purely economic interests and energy needs, rather they should be
based on the EU's common interests, she said. Only that would be the
proper way to promote the development of democracy in russia - a topic
of common interest to both Finland and Latvia.
In speaking on energy, the president expressed her view that the EU
must reduce its reliance upon fossil fuels and upon the political whims
of large-scale supplying countries. Consequently the EU must install a
common energy policy sooner rather than later. Evren more pressing is
the existing need to develop serious energy alternatives to that fossil
fuel.
As previously reported Vike-Freibergs participated in the official
welcoming ceremony at the presidential palace during the state visit.
Her arrival was in response to an invitation by Finnish president
Tarjas Halonen.
After the welcoming ceremony and opening speeches the joint delegation
visted the Finnish Hietaniemi war cemetary where Freibergs laid a
wreath in their honor.
[Hmmm.. too bad she can't do the same in Latvia]
[...]
Later Vike-Freibergs gave a lacture at Helsinki University on the
them of 'Latvia in Europe - Invitations and Opportunities'. This is the
first of the university's anticipated lecture series on the theme of
the European Union.
A meeting with the Finnish parliamentary chairman, Pavo Liponenu, was
scheduled for Wednesday as well as a meeting with Finnish business
entrepreneurs doing business in Latvia.
The program was scheduled to take place in the city of Porvo where the
foundations of a unified Finnish nationality were established in 1809.
[....]
This vists occurs shortly before Finland assumes the rotating EU
presidency this July.'
